A Brief Introduction of Guang An Men Hospital

Guang An Men Hospital(including the Second institute of Clinical Medicine and the Institute of Ophthalmology)was founded in 1955 as an affiliated hospital of China Academy of TCM. It is a general hospital of TCM conducting clinical practice scientific research and teaching, together with specialties in many departments. It is a clinical pharmacological research base of Chinese herbs and also a part of the Traditional Medicine Cooperative center organized by WHO. The State Administration Bureau of TCM awarded titles of "The class A among First Grade of TCM Hospitals"and "National Key Model Hospital of TCM"to Guang An Men Hospital in 1994. Entrusted by the Ministry of Public Health, this hospital runs TCM training courses for those doctors of Western Medicine(WM).
Guang An Men Hospital boasts a large number of noted specialists in TCM and Integration of TCM and WM. They have contributed a lot to the development of TCM in China. At present, there are 816 medical and technical staves including 48 professors and 104 vice-professors. In addition, 4 TCM specialists have been awarded diplomas of "Albert Einstein World Award of Science"by World Cultural Council for their remarkable achievements in scientific research, 4 awarded national outstanding experts and special government prizes. In recent years, 47 experts have become supervisors to postgraduates and 7 to candidates for doctorates. There are 13 wards with 505 beds in the Inpatient Department. The daily outpatient visits number over 2000.This hospital has 24 clinical departments including Internal Medicine Dept.Surgery, Gynaecology, pediatrics, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Acupuncture, Massage, Urology,Qi-gong, proctology, Dermatology, Gerontology, Stomatology, ENT, Emergency and an Isolated dept. for patients of Hepatitis, 11 Medico-technical Depts. including pharmacy, Radiology, Clinical Lab, Ultrasonic Diagnosis Dept. Pathology, Endoscopic Dept. and Function Test Dept. one basic research room, one clinical pharmacological research room and 10 clinical research rooms including internal Medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, oncology, dermatology, urology, proctology, geriatrics and nursing dept.
This Hospital now possesses enough modern equipments that are necessary for medical diagnosis, treatments and research, including CT,200-1000mA X-Ray, Ultrasonic Technicolour Doppler, Flow Imaging System, Cranial Ultrasound, Abdominal Ultrasound, Bronchoscope, Gastroscope, Duodenoscope, Colonoscope, Holter, CCU, Automatic Biochemical Analyser, Hemodialysis and ESWL.
The characteristics of TCM are always emphasized in this hospital. Therefore, patients are mainly treated with traditional therapies, but are also supplemented with modem diagnostic methods. Rich experiences in developing effective therapies including acupuncture and massage have bee accumulated in the treatments of cancer, cerebrocardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, Bi syndrome (including rheumatic or rheumatoid arthritis), renal diseases, senile diseases, digestive diseases, retinal pigmentary degeneration, optic nerve atrophy, urinary stone, prostatic diseases, andropathy, psoriasis, eczema, soft tissue injury and common gynaecological and pediatric diseases. Since 1978,55 scientific research achievements have been obtained. Among them,3 belonged to national awards for scientific and technological progress,16 were awarded by the Ministry of public Health and 29 by the Academy of TCM. The well-known "Xiao Zhi Ling" had won the gold medal of 14th Zagreb International Inventors Exhibition in Eugoslavia and the First Grade Knight Medal of the 35th Eureka World Inventors Exhibition in Brussels. This hospital has also invented a series of herbal patent medicine and health products of remarkable curative effects, such as "Chinese Miraculous Recipe" pertaining to improve sexual impotancy, "Hua Tai Nourishing Wine", "No.1 Diabetic Conqueror Tablet". "Diabetic capsule to treat vascular Complication", "Urinary Stone Expellent", "Anti-prostatitis Pill", "Psoriatic Conqueror Pill", "Medicinal Granules to invigorate the spleen and kidney" to treat cancers", "Cold decoction to strengthen patient's resistence and to prevent cancerous growth", "Anti-cancer and dephlogisticate capsule", "Anti-asthmatic plaster","No.1 powder for external use to treat cervical erosion", "No.1 Eyedrops for corneal virus infection" and "Medicinal granules to treat arrhythmia". The first two ones were elected as National New Products respectively by the National Science and Technology committee in 1991 and 1992.
Guang An Men Hospital has become an important window of international medical exchange. Each year foreigners from many countries come to the hospital for medical treatments, visits, study and academic exchange. Entrusted by the government, this hospital also provides medical service for foreigners at home and abroad. The international Clinical Acupuncture and TCM Training Center has so far trained more than 1000 acupuncturists from many countries. At present, the basic course, advanced course and various training courses and organized to receive foreign learners of acupuncture, massage, internal medicine, herbs and Qi-gong(a system of deep breathing exercise).
Since the carrying out of the opening policy, as an experimental unit of the Ministry of Public Health, Guang An Men Hospital has been making some valuable exploration and much progress has been reached in various aspects, especially in medical treatments, research and education. All these achievements enable this hospital to enter into a new stage in its development. Emphasizing "the strategy of intellectuals, achievements, quality, characteristics and efficacy", as well as to cherish the hope of fully bringing out the potentialities, the staves of Guang An Men Hospital are working heart and soul to make their contribution advantageous to improve the health of people and to promote the development of TCM.
